A free program for secondary school students in Victoria highlighting the real-life applications of biotechnology to food production and agriculture. Get into Genes is strongly linked with National and State curricula and is developed in collaboration with teachers. Students love the fast-paced, interactive workstations where they can discover the relationship between molecular biology, genetics and plant and animal breeding. A highly visual Prezi introduction showcases the latest DNA technologies and their use in plant and animal breeding. Interactive workstations explore DNA extraction, gel electrophoresis, restriction enzymes, molecular markers, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and genetic modification (GM). A second workshop is available where senior students develop critical thinking skills as they discuss and debate the wider implications of biotechnology applications in agriculture.
